my baby sister has decided to make me feel old by going off to college this fall. i'm trying to think up a list of things i wish i knew before going to college or just general advise about going off to college. i'm wondering if you'd help out...

What do you wish you knew before college?

The first half-dozen times I saw this post, I thought it said "baby sitter." I was confused.

Tell her that grades only matter if she's going to grad school.

and they don't matter much, even then!

Is she living in the dorms? Because that was one thing I wish I'd done when I went to college. I feel like I really missed out by not having that experience.

Um... things I wish I'd known? That you don't have to choose a major and stick to it right away. Freshman year is a good time to explore lots of different classes.

That it is way too easy to abuse credit cards. She should avoid signing up for any of them, no matter what silly free gift they may offer. My brother got into deep shit with them during his first couple years of college and is still paying it off. My own experience was not as bad but far from ideal.

yeah, i think i would like to underline that choosing a major isn't necessary for a couple of years, even. there's such a pressure put on incoming freshmen to have their four years all mapped out, and it's just unreasonable to expect that you won't change your mind.

and with that: there's nothing wrong with changing your mind halfway through. much better to take an extra year if you need to and get a degree you love using than to take four years and hate your major.

My sister says:

* Don't worry about what you study. All anyone cares about is that you got a degree.

* Spend your time doing work in the field you want to work in because every job requires three years of experience anyway.

* Don't fall asleep with your breasts duct taped together ("That happened to one of my friends. It sucked. She taped them up for a party.")

* Sleep outside sometimes. It's fun.

I add:

* Attending class is very important even though it really sucks to do it sometimes.

* Remember that in community living *everyone* does know what you did last night and reputations are aquired quickly.
